Span Consulting Engineers was engaged by the local council to develop a remediation design for deteriorating cantilever concrete slabs and columns at a council managed aquatic centre. Following a comprehensive structural inspection and defect assessment, our team identified significant corrosion of reinforcing bars caused by water leakage, resulting in concrete spalling, cracking, and visible rust staining on the structure. The remediation process involved careful removal of damaged concrete to expose the affected reinforcement. Deteriorated reinforcing bars were precisely cut out and replaced with new reinforcement properly lapped to the sound existing bars before new concrete was applied. For structurally compromised columns, we designed a strengthening solution whereby additional longitudinal reinforcement was installed around the perimeter of the existing columns (column jacketing), with properly prepared surfaces to ensure strong bonding between existing and new concrete. This strategic rehabilitation approach restored structural integrity while minimizing facility downtime and avoiding the substantially higher costs of complete replacement. -
